Happy holidays
Isn’t it something you say around december? When all the big religions have holidays. Anyway this is a festive time also. I don’t know when exactly is Easter, but it’s around this time isn’t it? Today, however, starts the holiday of Passover, or Pesach, or holiday of spring, or the holiday of freedom. You name it, it’s got tons of names! Now I’m not a religious person, I don’t even believe in God. But, Jewish holidays are a part of a tradition that isn’t wholly religious but more of a tradition of a group of people..who tend to be under some attack and always survive it. That’s something to celebrate, right?
We have the big dinner today, yet again at my aunt’s. I would love to go there if it was just her and her creepy husband, but her daughter’s family gonna be there too. I always feel weird around my cousins, they’re old enough to be my parents and we were never close. Everytime we meet I don’t know what to do with the hug-kiss issue. Everyone sort of stands in line, the kissing line, and I’m always last.
Last year I wore a dress, but didn’t feel all girly and it came out all awkward. I looked at a picture from that night and the way I sat also looked as if I’m much fatter than reality. I guess I need lessons. “How to Wear A Dress for Dummies”. Tonight I’ll wear pants for sure. I don’t know what to eat now. My aunt always serves meat AND chicken AND fish AND about 20 types of salads and side dishes like potatoes or stuffed grapevine leaves (yum!!!) AND matzah balls soup AND cake AND 2 more cakes my mom baked AND sickness for the big finish. Craziness.
Of course to get to all that we have to read the haggadah, or this book with tales about slaves, and anciet egypt, and blood, frogs, lice and what not. And there’s a kinky part with some whore who seduced someone and somehow it always happens that I have to read it on my turn of reading. That’s not something you wanna hear around the dinner table, with kids and all……
For the next week I’ll eat mostly a thick board that gets stuck in your teeth and make some unfortunate people constipate, that is the Matza. But you top it with chocolate (I made sure the nuttela is all full) and it’s a delight! Of course I have tons of breads in the freezer, for any sudden need. I’m sure I’ll have a lot of it.. staying at home studying makes you eat more and more and more and more….
