2010

Yep, new year. This number seems so futuristic. 2010. It’s so much. The 1990′s look so far away. It’s not the beginning of the new millennium anymore, but 10 years into it. According to Back to the Future II, 2015 looks nothing like it’ll be able to look like 5 years from now. However, when I think about the global change, mainly global technology change, 2010 is a different world from 2000. I could sum up the decade from a personal point of view but it’ll be petty short. Let’s see, 2000. The new millennium “party” was lame as I spent it on the roof of some girl’s house with a bunch of other 14 year olds. I remember the Backstreet Boys’ Millennium CD which was a big hit then. Big part of my life too. Anyway, it was junior high, which was bad time to be..alive.

2001 was the year in which I first visited the USA. I guess it was good timing to visit New York, a month before 9/11. I bought this porcelain cup with the towers and the beautiful skyline on it. I wonder what all those souvenir shops did with those things afterwards. That cup is still with me, it’s my personal cup and no one else drinks from it. It was also the year I started high school, which were another 3 years I can throw to the garbage.

2002 is when I first started being active and going to the gym. I counted calories and did that whole crazy thing and started being aware of what I eat and how much sugar a coca cola can actually consists of. It didn’t last long… except for the gym part. And I AM a consumer of light drinks now. At least that.

2003 wasn’t all that great. It was the year of hard studying and one heartbreaking death of my beloved dog Sandy. She was my first dog and her disease was painful to watch.  It messed that year up even more than the usual. However, Skye came into my life in July and help things get better.

2004 was the year of salvation, as 12 years of school ended (without a bang though). More importantly, 12 years of seeing the same a-holes at 3 different schools (and some in kindergarden) came to an end. Also, this was a year when I yet again visited the USA in a critical moment - Orlando, 1 day after some hurricane storms. Mom told me to stay on the north-east coast or come back home, yet I insisted on looking the hurricane in the eyes and frighten it ’till it’s gone. That was a fun weekend in the deserted Disney parks.

2005 started with a pointless commitment to the army, which started in the coldest winter ever in a cold and wet tent – and ended 2 years later in a cold (this time metaphorically speaking) office without major life changes, lessons or benefit to myself or my country.

2006 was the same shit, but this time with a quick jump to Holland. That marked the first time I was abroad without a family member, but still not alone. Someday that should be done also.

2007 started with a great salvation #2, the release from the olive green uniforms. Something I could never believe I’ll accomplish to the fullest, but I did. Didn’t give me anything in return but at least I’m less of a despised outcast in my society. The year ended however with another type of pain in the ass commitment, university. It was also the first time I paid for something meaningful, and expensive, and life consuming – this very own laptop.

2008 wasn’t at all exciting, just a year. I’m sure there was something… hmm OK. So I was at that place…at that time…. doing that thing….

Anyway, 2009. Well, year of the first car. Year of cool boots. Year of me wearing a dress. Year of me eating a real wiener schnitzel.

As a tech enthusiast I can mention a few things that made this decade pretty sufferable. IPOD for starters, USB and disk on key, gmail, google chrome, youtube, dare I say affordable cellphones, wi fi, LCD, DVD’s, wikipedia, web 2.0. And why not, a shout out to wordpress! As a couch potato I should mention satellite tv, and many shows that evolutionized in those 10 years, from reality tv to pseudo reality like The (american) Office.

As a messenger enthusiast (oh yeah, it was the decade that killed ICQ and replaced it with windows live, or facebook chat in other cases) I should mention Payal. Yes, you! since I can’t remember but I think it was 1999 when we first chatted, we kept it through out the 2000′s. And it’s your birthday today! Now the entire blogsphere togheter: Happy birthday Payal! (notice the pink!) And now the jewish blogsphere: Mazel tov! Thank you for popping in this world some twenty something years ago :D

Finally, I should only hope 2010-2020 will be the decade of growing up, of taking control, of finding the courage to live to the fullest, and of many surprises to come. All to the background of the right new music to be created, the mind-blowing movies to be produced and the successful bakeries to be launched.
